U.S. tornado activity varies by region and time of year. The historical archive helps explore those patterns, provided its changing reporting coverage stays part of the interpretation.

Where do tornadoes occur most?

The central United States has a broad concentration of tornado activity, but the Southeast and Midwest also experience tornadoes. A state's raw total depends partly on its size and the years and rating groups counted. It does not give an individual's probability of being struck.

When is tornado season?

Tornadoes can happen in any month. The Gulf Coast's seasonal peak is earlier in spring; the southern Plains commonly peak in May and early June, and the northern Plains and upper Midwest in June or July. These broad patterns come from NOAA NSSL's tornado basics, not a forecast for any particular year.

The chart pools all archive years. A month with many records may include major outbreaks; it is not a count of tornado days. Regional timing can be obscured by a national total. Compare Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama for different distributions.

What is Tornado Alley?

“Tornado Alley” is an informal name for an area of frequent tornadoes, not a fixed official boundary. Maps differ depending on the period, area, and tornado categories they measure. NSSL explains that activity shifts from the Southeast in cooler months toward the Plains and farther north in warmer months. Tornadoes also occur outside the area people call Tornado Alley. Are tornadoes becoming more common?

Raw report totals cannot answer that question by themselves. Changes in population, spotting, radar coverage, and surveys affect which tornadoes enter the archive. Earlier records miss more weak events. NOAA's Tornado FAQ discusses these reporting limitations.

Even restricting a comparison to higher ratings does not eliminate classification and survey differences. Our figures describe this archive; they do not isolate a climate-change effect or establish the cause of a regional pattern.

How to compare places and years

Use the same years, rating selection, and geographic definition. Keep original F and EF labels visible, inspect unusually busy dates, and distinguish whole tracks from state segments. A comparison of damages also needs separate consideration of exposure and loss reporting: dollar loss and tornado intensity are different measures.
